Smedley Adopt-A-Trail Program

Do You Enjoy Hiking and Biking in Smedley? Are You at Home in the Woods? Would You Like to Help Us with Maintaining the Smedley and Springfield Trails?
The Friends of Smedley Park (FSP) has an Adopt-A-Trail program which allows groups, families, organizations and individuals to participate in the preservation of over 10 miles of trails. We have divided our trails into 16 segments, each with its own personality and unique needs.
What is Involved in Adopting a Trail?
Adoption would involve periodic clearing, pruning, litter collection, weed-whacking (with our assistance), and improving as needed for a designated segment of a trail. The time involved would be two to three hours about three times a year (winter, late spring and mid-summer). We would provide guidance and training in pruning overgrowth, trimming bushes, and maintaining sufficient clearance along the paths. The work can be completed on your own schedule.
Best Practices for Trail Maintenance
  • Pruning thorny bushes (e.g., multiflora rose, wineberry bush, devil’s walking stick) in the winter allows easier cutting at the base of the plant.
  • Follow-up pruning in late spring or early summer assures good trail clearance.
  • Weed whacking, where needed, to ground level should be done in early summer.
  • Where possible, trim trail to a width of 6 feet.
  • Use no herbicides.
A minimal commitment period of one year is required.
